Keyhole Canyon – Zion National Park
A really short but fun technical canyon right on the outskirts of the park. 2~3 rappels. We sat in the car contemplating if we should go in as it started sprinkling. Obviously, you don’t want to go into a slot canyon in the rain. But the forecast was scattered showers and we had a good view. Precipitation levels were low and we heard about a sneak route that cut the canyon in half, so we decided to go up and check it out. The light rains cleared on our way up and we saw our chance, so we went in…Still motivated to move quickly. 30 minutes (or maybe less) and we were back at the car. Great for beginners, short and beautiful, Keyhole Canyon is a great time.
As with all technical routes, DO NOT enter a canyon if you do not have the gear and experience to get through. Canyoneering requires an entirely different skill set than hiking. It’s a blast and if you are interested, research places that offer training so you can get the skills necessary to enjoy these amazing places.
