Zion National Park Accommodations, Hotels, Vacation Rentals & Lodging

We started out the day at 330am from Moab UT and drove to Zion just for Angels Landing and did not get back to Moab till 10pm. Wife and sons friend made it about 1/3 of the way up. Son made it about 2/3 of the way up. I have been talking about doing this for years so I had to finish. And I did! I’m so glad I did because the views were amazing!

See our channel for a video of the hike itself!!! Also, see our channel for more on the guy balancing his baby on the edge of the summit!

We visited Zion National Park and decided to take on Angels Landing, probably the most precarious but rewarding hike in Northern America. The trail starts easily with lots of switchbacks. The trail is safe and a good challenge for most of the way. Many people turn around or stop and picnic when they reach the toilets a few miles in. The last 0.5 miles of the trail is the dangerous part and the crux of the trail (1 mile total as you have to come back the way you came!). It’s a very narrow ridge that you have to trace for those 0.5miles. Chains are provided on the narrow parts and they are very solid. The rocks can get slippery, as you can see, it was SNOWING when we visited!! I took a video of a guy balancing his baby of the edge of the cliff edge, crazy!!! I have included that here and uploaded it as a separate video! Couldn’t believe it! lol

————-

Angels Landing Trail is a 5 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Springdale, Utah that features a river and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, and nature trips and is best used from February until October.

Distance: 5.0 miles
Elevation Gain: 1,630 feet
Route Type: Out & Back

Angels Landing is a strenuous trail in Zion National Park with steep drop-offs and very narrow sections – it is also the most popular hike in Zion. Start by parking at The Grotto trailhead, or taking the West Rim Shuttle to The Grotto shuttle stop. Begin by crossing a bridge over the Virgin River, the first 2-miles of the West Rim Trail are a well-maintained, paved trail. Most of the path is sunny, but Refrigerator Canyon offers shade and often a cool breeze.

The trail takes you up Walter’s Wiggles, a set of 21 steep switchbacks that take their name from Walter Ruesch, Zion National Park’s first superintendent. The last half-mile (0.8 km) follows a steep and narrow ridge from Scout Lookout to Angels Landing itself, a fantastic observation point 1500 feet above Zion Canyon. Anchored support chains are attached along some sections of the sheer cliff. You are rewarded with an excellent view of the main canyon at the top.

Avoid standing near the edge at all times! Do not hike the trail when it is wet, storming, or when high winds are present. If you are afraid of heights this trail is not recommended. This is a good early morning hike to check off your bucket list – it will surely be one of you favorite hikes! Make sure to allow time to be off the trail by dark if starting late in the day.

OK…. This is a LONG video. Sorry? Anyways I hiked Angels Landing on a Sunday Morning on Veterans Day weekend. While hiking I couldn’t believe all the things I discovered on the hike even knowing I watched so many videos! So on the Angels Landing portion of the hike I did not edit the footage to show you the full experience. Although on my way back down my GoPro died with about 10 minutes to go. It is unedited and has a few choice words plus some random pointless conversations.
If you are unfamiliar with Angels Landing it is unbelievable hiking trail in Zion National Park. You have to take the bus to the Grotto and cross the street to hike a portion of the West Rim Trail. After going up over 1000′ elevation change you will split off on Angels Landing. I have also Hiked this trail at night, stay tuned for a night hike video!

I have included some time stamps below so you can skip around to see what you want to throughout the video.
Intro 0-15:56
West Rim Trail 15:56 – 25:02
Walters Wiggles 21:53
Angles Landing up 25:02 – 59:40
Angels Landing Down 1:00:23 – 1:25:37
West Rim Down 1:25:37 to end

Angels Landing is one of the world’s most renowned hikes and is an unforgettable short adventure hike worthy of all bucket lists. The views of Zion Canyon’s 270 million-year-old rock layers will time travel you back to the Triassic period when this section of the Colorado Plateau was a flat basin at sea level.
