What an awesome canyon! We hit Spry Canyon right at the end of October for a great day. It hadn’t rained for quite some time so we decided to not bring wetsuits and we were able to dodge all water except for one little section which was about waist deep. Lots of great rappels in Spry. I do believe that this canyon is now one of my favorites!

This is a continuation from the Russell Gulch video. Surprisingly the water wasn’t as icy as we thought it would be. Subway always rocks!

We hit this short but sweet canyon right at the end of October. A freezing start but worth it, first rappel is right around 165ft with the second being close to 100ft and then an easy walk out. Took us about five hours to complete, lost some time dealing with a massive tangle.

Pine Creek Canyon – Zion National Park

I’ve had the privilege to go through this canyon twice; once it was almost completely dry. This time it was wet and full with a lot of swimming sections. Either way, it’s one of the most fun canyons around.

Short with a quick succession of rappels and, of course, a long and punishing exit route. Pine Creek is filled with highlights. The long, dark narrow sections never get old. Then there is the Pine Creek Cathedral; a 50’ rappel next to a double arch. You’ll sit (or doggy paddle, depending on conditions) and stare in awe. It’s an unreal place.

Then there’s the big finale; a 100’ free hanging rappel just before the canyon opens up. It’s exhilarating stepping onto the edge and then over, putting complete trust in your gear for the fast and fun ride down. It’s at this point that you’ll decide if you love canyoneering, or if it’s a little too much for you. Personally, this is the spot where I always start thinking about when I can get back into a canyon and do it all again.

A quick slide into a grotto and you’re out into the sunlight again. The grotto usually has a flowing spring, and it’s a great place to stow your gear and get ready for the boulder scrambling route back to your car. As far as bang for your buck, Pine Creek is hard to beat.
