Continuing on our journey across the southwest, Matt and I face some challenges in Cedar City, Utah. The winds are high (30 knots) and the Density altitude is high (8200 feet).

Working as a team, we put together a solid plan to takeoff out of the area and head toward Zion National Park, on our way to Santa Fe.

This long flight would really test our endurance as pilots. It’s easier when you have two pilots that can share the duties throughout the day. Cuts down on the fatigue. Overall, it was a really enjoyable and beautiful flight.

Right along and see how pilots do what they do and roll with the punches. We weren’t even supposed to go to Cedar City, as we diverted here for fuel reasons. It all worked out and we ended up enjoying our lunch and ride in the funny crew car.

Matt has recently been going through all his flight training. At the time of this video he hadn’t quite gotten his Commercial Rating, but had just finished his instrument rating. He was already flying like a professional and conducted himself very well. He’s well on his way in the aviation community, and runs a company called Winged Aviation that helps Veterans get into aviation.

Let me know if you have any questions about the flight.

Drone footage of Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park, Utah.

Bryce Canyon National Park, a sprawling reserve in southern Utah, is known for crimson-colored hoodoos, which are spire-shaped rock formations. The park’s main road leads past the expansive Bryce Amphitheater, a hoodoo-filled depression lying below the Rim Trail hiking path. It has overlooks at Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, Inspiration Point and Bryce Point. Prime viewing times are around sunup and sundown.

Zion National Park is a southwest Utah nature preserve distinguished by Zion Canyon’s steep red cliffs. Zion Canyon Scenic Drive cuts through its main section, leading to forest trails along the Virgin River. The river flows to the Emerald Pools, which have waterfalls and a hanging garden. Also along the river, partly through deep chasms, is Zion Narrows wading hike.

Drones, quadcopters, and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are what get us excited. We enjoy FPV drone racing, building and fixing racers. From commercial ready-to-fly camera drones like the Holystone HS100G, DJI Maverick, or cheap brands. Whether you are a beginner or FAA Part 107 certified drone pilot, Drones R’ Fun has reviews, information and tips that will help you get the most out of your drone flying experience.

Join along as I take two friends and we fly in our Cessna 210 to Zion National Park. In Part 1 we fly from Athens, Tennessee (McMinn County Airport, KMMI) to Harrison, Arkansas (Boone County Airport, KHRO). We were treated to a beautiful sunset and some really smooth night flight. My buddy even had barbecue ready for us when we landed. What a great day of flying! Thanks for watching!

Here it is…the start of my 2019 trip to Zion National Park!! This year I was joined by two friends from high school. I had a ton of fun showing them Zion for the first time. Of course, as has become the norm, the trip was not without its hiccups. Last year my vacuum pump bit the dust over Albuquerque. This year, the night before we were supposed to leave, I was making a short refueling flight to a local airport. Immediately after takeoff I got a voltage warning light; my alternator had died! I immediately lowered my landing gear and flaps, killed the radios, and turned around to land. My worst fears were somewhat alleviated when I took off the cowling and realized that it was the alternator belt that had snapped…a much quicker fix.

Except that my mechanics was out of town. I scrambled all night and the next morning to find a belt and a mechanic. Found those, then had to get the plane refueled. Then had to get my now dead battery charged. And this was all before we even got in the air! Thankfully all went smoothly and the best small airport FBO in the world, Athens Air LLC, took great care of me as usual. We were able to takeoff on schedule as if nothing had ever happened.

And let me tell you, we had a FULLY loaded airplane! It’s rare that weight and balance is even a consideration with the 210, but I had to pay close attention to it with this flight. With full fuel we were just at 3800 pounds (max gross weight) but the plane handled it perfectly. The Centurion is an absolute best of a Cessna…shame they don’t make them anymore. Once airborne, we set a course for Harrison Arkansas to stay the night with a friend. We were treated to a sunset that just didn’t quit!! Thanks for joining along on the first leg to Zion National Park!!

This was the day I had anticipated most when thinking about my Zion trip. Flying is always best when shared with friends, and on this trip I took up fellow large format photographers Ben Horne, Justin Lowery, and Marty Quinn for an aerial tour of the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and several other famous landscapes along the way. It was a day I’ll never forget!

Flying in the Cessna 210, we traversed each of the 4 VFR corridors in the Grand Canyon. These are special areas where airplanes can fly over the park at specific altitudes. It’s an incredible way to be able to experience the Grand Canyon.

Once we flew over the park, we headed north to Zion. Along the way, the guys pointed out areas such as White Pocket, The Wave, and Coyote Gulch. I was thankful to have them along; otherwise, I never would have known where these areas were.

As before, Zion was truly special from above. We got to experience the full magnitude of the better-than-normal fall color as the colors REALLY popped from up above. Once back on the ground, Ben and I had some unfinished push-up contest business. I’ll let you watch his video and determine for yourself who won…
