For our first six months or so, when we boondocked, we played the guessing game with our battery levels.
Are we fully charged? What percentage are we at? How much time is left? Will our furnace be able to run all night?
These are things you just don’t have to think about in a house. But, the struggle is real in an RV!

Mesa Verde National Park 🏞️

INFORMATION
Mesa Verde National Park 🌄, located in southwest Colorado just east of Cortez atop plateaus, is a preservation of Pueblo Native American culture and history from 500 to 1300 A.D. We stayed at the Sunrise RV Park in Cortez which is open year round. Other RV Parks, including campgrounds onsite at Mesa Verde National Park, are only open seasonally.

We visited Mesa Verde National Park in late October. By this time, the Mesa Verde National Park visitor center had stopped offering ranger-led Cliff Dwelling / Balcony Home tours for the year, but both loop drives, with scenic views and hikes were still open.

When we arrived at the Mesa Verde National Park visitor center, the rangers informed us the gates to both loops close every evening and we would be stuck on the loops until the morning if we were not out by sunset! The Mesa Verde National Park visitor center offers excellent exhibits on the Pueblo Native Americans who lived in the area between 500 and 1300 A.D.

From the visitor’s center, it is a 20-30 minute drive to both loops. On the way in (or out for us), about half way to the loops, you can stop at the Far View sites which is where you see our kids running in and out of the Kivas toward the end of the video.

You can visit both loops and stop off at each of the viewpoints and exhibitions in a single day if you plan to have about 3-4 hours. We started off with the Mesa Top Loop first, because the chronologically that is how the Pueblo lived in the area starting around 500 A.D. at the first Pit House we showcase toward the beginning of the video.

Throughout the video, we will take you to each of the locations on both loops, including the Sun Temple, and culminating with a view of the Balcony House which was lived in around 1200-1300 A.D. The architecture is beautiful and views dramatic. We kept wondering, Why did they leave or what happened?

This is a great park to stay at to see Zion National Park. It is only about a 15 minute drive to the park and during the busy season of the year they offer a shuttle to the park! There nightly rate is very pricy but there monthly rate is very affordable, and who wouldn’t want to stay a month right next to Zion! I could have used a little more time to be honest! You are also near St. George Utah which there is a lot to do and see there as well!
So about the park… They offer full hook up sites with concrete pads and a grassy area! Zion River Resort has propane, laundry, a fully stocked store, free coffee, a social room, and a hot tub and a pool! Not to mention there WIFI is actually usable! You can actually stream on their WIFI which we all know is rare!
Zion River Resort has amenities and is a prime location to see attractions!

RV Travel – Slot Canyons – Kanab, Utah

Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon, Peek-A-Boo, also commonly known as Red Canyon, is an easy, short hike (0.7 miles round trip) into one of the most beautiful slot canyons in the area. The stunning orange, sandstone walls make an amazing backdrop for photographs. In the canyon, you will find ancient Moqui Steps climbing the canyon wall as well as logs balanced between the canyon walls above you.

Keep in mind, deep sand makes the route to Peek-A-Boo difficult, and in some cases, impassable. In recent years, flash floods have pushed boulders into the Peek-A-Boo Canyon, creating drop-offs that may pose challenges for visitors. Floods frequently change the height and difficulty of these obstacles by depositing or washing away sediment and debris.

Latitude / Longitude 37.17928616, -112.5597135
Directions Travel north of Kanab, UT for 9 miles and then make an eastern turn after the Peek-A-Boo sign along the highway. You will go up a small hill and cross a cattle guard before entering the large, graveled parking area. On the eastern side of the parking area, you will find BLM route 102. Follow route 102 until you reach a wash, also known as a dry riverbed. Once you’ve reached the wash, travel west onto BLM route 106H and follow the wash until it dead ends at the slot canyon.

The route to the Peek-A-Boo trailhead is deep sand and requires a four-wheel, high-clearance vehicle and may even be inaccessible to those vehicles in the summer months. ATVs and UTVs are the most common mode of transportation to the canyon from the trailhead.

Zion National Park Accommodations, Hotels, Vacation Rentals & Lodging

If you are staying near Zion National Park there is a great tourist trap in Virgin Utah right down the road. Fort Zion is a gift shop, petting zoo, and restaurant. When we stoped in the restaurant was not open, they were apparently having staffing issues, but their food looked really good. The petting zoo is only a dollar a person to get in, and carrots are three for a dollar. So its a cheap outing to do with kids and the little town that is set up is great for pictures if you go the right time of day! Don’t forget to look for the Utah Werewolf when you are there!!!

This week, our travels take us to Cortez Colorado and Mesa Verde National Park! It did not disappoint! Check it out!
⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ Click Show More ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

After staying one night in Monument Valley (amazing by the way), we head to Cortez, CO and WestView RV Resort. The RV Resort is very new and very nice with spacious sites and plenty of amenities, including Pickle Ball courts, horseshoes, putting green, and even a Salon and Spa!

The weather was not cooperating for our first few days and it even snowed a bit…. In May! We’re just not used to that, being from Florida! But, the weather cleared up and we got to have some fun!

Once we got our first nice day, it was time to get Lucile (our Indian Roadmaster) out to stretch her legs. So, we headed to Durango with plans to eat (of course). The ride over was a nice ride and Durango seemed like a cool little town. But, we couldn’t agree on where to eat and just went home.

We were also finally able to get out and try the inflatable kayak that we had received (via Amazon) a whole month earlier. So, no returns if we don’t like it. 😳 We drove down to McPhee National Forrest Reservoir and gave her a spin. Absolutely beautiful area and lots of room to explore. The inflatable kayak is acceptable but not as good as any hard side kayak or canoe. It will do for now, but we’re investigating other options.

The highlight of our trip (and the reason we were in the area), was Mesa Verde! The ruins can only be explored with a tour guide, and tickets for said tours can only be purchased in person at the visitor center and only 2 days in advance. So, that’s what we did. The forecast looked good 2 days out, so we scoped out the Visitor center and campground on a cold rainy day.

On tour day, we had two new full time RV friends (Dan and Eva) join us and headed to the park. Mesa Verde did NOT disappoint! We took the Balcony House tour, followed by the Cliff Palace. Both require quite a bit of climbing wooden ladders on steep cliffs. If you’re afraid of heights, this is not for you. Both tours were amazing, but Cliff Palace takes the prize! It’s absolutely incredible to see such a place in person and walk these amazing structures that hosted the Pueblos for 700 years! Our video can, in no way, do it justice. You must put this place on your bucket list!

Coming up next in our adventures… Moab and Arches National Park!!!
