Grand Canyon (South Rim), Bryce Canyon & Zion National Parks 2019.

This is “Part 5” of our 5-week bucket list trip. We spent a day at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, and we took a quick detour to see Horseshoe Bend on the way to St George (UT), the Gateway for Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks where we spent 2 days there.

The South Rim is the most popular part of Grand Canyon National Park with its many Viewpoints including Mather Point, Yavapai Observation Station and architect Mary Colter’s Lookout Studio and her Desert View Watchtower.

Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoe-shaped incised meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona. A short and very popular 1.5km path to the Horseshoe Bend Overlook, where the river curves around by 270 degrees, is one of the most spectacular and oft-photographed places in Arizona.

Bryce Canyon National Park located in southern Utah near the city of Bryce, is a destination which attracts nature lovers from all over the world. Bryce Canyon National Park, 145 km2 of pure nature overwhelms those who experience it. “The beauty and charm of the wilderness are his for the asking, for the edges of the wilderness lie close beside the beaten roads of the present travel.”
— said President Theodore Roosevelt.

The Canyon walls of Zion National Park, massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink and red colors soaring into a brilliant blue sky, are a sight to behold. Located near Springdale Utah at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, the Great Basin and the Mojave Desert, Zion is Utah’s oldest National Park created in 1919. The Zion–Mount Carmel Highway can be travelled year-round and cuts through its main section.

Yet again, the weather was sunny and hot despite the high elevation of the National Parks. We did a couple of hikes and most notably the Queen’s Garden and Najavo loop trail in Bryce Canyon that was a truly amazing hike with great views and a landscape scenery found nowhere else in the world. The Canyon Overlook Trail was also a gem of a hike in Zion National Park. It’s short, it’s fun, and it takes you to an awesome viewpoint overlooking Zion Canyon.

Zion National Park Accommodations, Hotels, Vacation Rentals & Lodging

After a great weekend in St George, Utah with Family, Katie and I decided to be a little spontaneous and take the long way home by visiting two national parks in the same day. We thought we might as well take advantage of free park week and make it a big day.

We drove straight to Zion and got on the shuttle to go hike to Emerald Pools. It had been over ten years since I had last been to Zion and it was an awesome time hiking with my family.
Bryce Canyon is only a short 2 hour drive from Zion and so connecting the two in one day is not overly difficult. because we left Zion later than planned we didn’t get any time to really hike in Bryce, but it was still a great time.

I love that I get to share the outdoors with my family, and that we don’t make excuses for not getting out because we have a kid.
