During a recent visit of Valley of Fire State Park, an area known as Rainbow Vista caught my attention.

Rainbow Vista is a stop along the White Domes Road. The pamphlet and map you get at the visitor center states that there are some colorful sandstone formations to be seen there.

This is very true. Rainbow Vista has some of the most vibrant sandstone to view in the park, although it is fairly limited in quantity. Nonetheless, it won’t disappoint.

Problem is, I saw so many people confused about where to go and what to see in this area. I saw people walk right by the colorful sandstone, oblivious to its existence.

Also, there is another feature here known as Fire Canyon Overlook trail which is a fantastic little out and back trail that cuts through the heart of the beautiful fire red sandstone formations. Along this trail I saw many big horn sheep in the late afternoon, and assume you would also see them in the early morning hours too.

Curiously, Fire Canyon Overlook is not mentioned in the map they give you, and I talked to several folks confused about what it was or where to go.

This is because there is no clear signage that tells you which way to head to see each distinct thing. You kind of have to explore a bit yourself to figure it out.

For the diligent and thorough explorer, you should have no trouble figuring it out. But for those on a time budget, I could see how beautiful sights could be overlooked.

Seems likely that many will see one thing or another, but not both.

For me, my preferred approach to visiting Rainbow Vista is to walk on the leftmost trail from the parking lot which takes you directly to the colorful sandstone.

After arriving at the sandstone, if you are facing it, approximately right behind you is the direction you want to talk next, towards a distant sign (the one announcing the Fire Canyon Overlook trail). Head that way, do the relatively short overlook trail, and once back to the trailhead sign, walk straight back towards the parking lot.

By doing this, you essentially turn the Rainbow Vista experience into a loop trail.

One could also do the opposite direction and that would work too.

All in all though, this area is definitely worth your time.

If you are day tripping and have limited time, this is probably not something at the very top of your itinerary (Fire Wave, White Domes or Mouse’s Tank would probably trump this stop), but try to at least see the colorful sandstone and omit the Fire Canyon overlook trail if short on time, especially if you have or will be doing Mouse’s Tank, which is somewhat similar to the overlook trail experience (in my opinion).

Please sit back, relax and enjoy this compilation of our favorite animal encounters throughout our adventures here on the Cactus Atlas channel!

We will take you on a tour of the Southwest, hitting multiple locations where we encountered majestic creatures.

We visit the South Campground at Zion National Park, where we had many encounters with the mule deer that frequent the area. Even in my campsite!

We also explore on of my phobias… mountain lions. Being as though I hike solo in wilderness areas well known to be ideal habitats for cougars such as the Grand Canyon, I’d be lying if I told you it doesn’t make me a little nervous from time to time, although the chances of seeing a cougar in the wild are extremely slim, much less being attacked, which presents even slimmer chances. But, I got a chance to see one up close, playfully growling, at Out of Africa Wildlife Park in Camp Verde, Arizona. Gave me a whole new respect!

On the lighter side of things, I got to get a kiss from a giraffe at Out of Africa wildlife park, kissed some goats, and had beautiful Lorikeets perch all over me while I fed them at Rooster Cogburn’s Ostrich Ranch outside of Tucson, Arizona. And you will get to see all that here.

Next, I visit the South Rim of the Grand Canyon again where I had my first ever spotting of wild big horn sheep scaling the steep walls of the canyon. While an amazing sight, it did not compare to the close up encounters I had with big horn sheep at Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.

Finally, the grand finale was shot during a stay at Mather Campground at the Grand Canyon South Rim. At Mather Campground, you will have very good chances of seeing the amazingly large elk that frequent the area. I had many close encounters with elk during my stay there, sometimes feet away from my campsite. The best was the elk that I caught drinking out of one of the utility sinks located at the campground.

Since this video covered many locations throughout our travels, I will provide links below to all of the videos where many of these clips originated from in case you want to see more!

Our journey started from Las Vegas, NV on 10/23/2019
Drove up an hour north to Valley of Fire State Park. We have visited Mouse Tanks, Bee Hives, Dome before closing at Sunset. Headed back to Las Vegas for night.
Day 2 started with breakfast in town followed by 3-hour drive to Lake Powell, AZ. We have been to Zion National Park last year so we skipped it this time.
Next morning we aboard a cruise boat to Rainbow Bridge National Park. The scenic view worth the money and wait. It took about 2-3 hours one-way to the little pier in between the rock. We had about 60-90 min to explore before heading back to Lake Powell Resort. We were at Horseshoe Bend last year but we did not visit Lower Antelope Canyon. So we went there. The view was Magnificent. Check out other photos on my Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/raysdronographia/

Part 2 is in Progress…
