Zion National Park Accommodations, Hotels, Vacation Rentals & Lodging

Our last day at Bryce Canyon National Park and as we loved it so much, we decided to hike Wall Street again but in the opposite direct. Funny how things look different when you change your hike direction, gives a different perspective on things. We then hiked back up the Navajo Loop trail and finally headed down to Fairyland Point and Mossy Cave before leaving Bryce Canyon, continuing on our road-trip from Los Angeles to Monument Valley, August 2017. Filmed in High Definition using GoPro Hero5 with GoPro Karma Grip.

Zion Canyon is one of the many spectacular sandstone canyons carved out of the Colorado
plateau. Though it is a desert, water carved this land, removing material over the millennia, cutting deep through the sandstone. This flowing water has formed a land rich in amazing formations such as the subway and the zion narrows. Water also has created one of Zion’s most unique habitats, the hanging gardens. Here water flows from the rock. American dippers build their nests among the plants clinging to the wall. Ripple bugs skitter about, and Long-jaw orbweavers spin webs to trap any insects coming in for a drink.
However, one species here is a little more emblematic and special, the Zion Snail. This tiny snail is endemic to hanging gardens in only a 3 mile stretch of canyon. Grazing on algae, they move slowly along the rockface. Its foot is unusually large, giving it more powerful suction in this vertical habitat with flowing water. Likewise its thin, smooth shell helps reduce drag, being similar to many unrelated stream dwelling snails. Usually specimens encountered are very small, only the size of a pinhead, but some get to grow a bit larger, though still smaller than a kernal of corn. They were described in 1925, just 6 years after Zion national park was established, by malacologist Henry Pilsbry who was very excited by his discovery of this snail living in these unique habitats.

My goal is to document interesting behavior and highlight interesting species I encounter both in exotic locations, and on backyard expeditions.

Zion National Park is a southwest Utah nature preserve distinguished by Zion Canyon’s steep red cliffs. Zion Canyon Scenic Drive cuts through its main section, leading to forest trails along the Virgin River. The river flows to the Emerald Pools, which have waterfalls and a hanging garden. Also along the river, partly through deep chasms, is Zion Narrows wading hike.

Zion National Park Accommodations, Hotels, Vacation Rentals & Lodging

Kutthroat Outdoors tackles 4 hikes in one afternoon as we set out to explore the landscapes of Zion National Park. We venture into the world famous Narrows, stroll down the Pa’rus trail, and hike into the Lower Emerald Pools. Tag along as your favorite outdoorsmen and a woman take you on a tour of one of the world’s most popular National Parks.

Along the way we find massive beetles, sizzling hotdogs, freezing cold water, scenic waterfalls, and the peaceful flowing rivers that carved these magnificent canyon attractions.

The first hike we experienced was The Grotto, although it sounds cool, it’s not. It’s a connecting trail from shuttle stops that took around 10 minutes. From the end of the Grotto we continued on to the Lower Emerald Pools. A 0.8 mile paved hike to the falls and the beautiful pools of water below. Typically you can venture on from this point to the Middle and Upper Emerald Pools above, but doe to unstable rock and a massive rockslide earlier in the season, these trails were shutdown for the safety of the parks visitors. We then shuttled up the Canyon to hike The Narrows, one of the most popular tourist attractions Utah has to offer. Due to the point in the season, plunging temperatures and a lack of sunshine made these waters nearly impassable (30 degrees). We made the mistake of not renting out water shoes and waiters at the visiting center for this bone chilling trek. The water on this 5 mile hike goes nearly chest deep at points and we were numb some 20 minutes down the trail, so we turned around. Definitely get the water gear… We then rounded out the day with a relaxing stroll down the Pa’rus trail. A popular 1.8 mile biking trail, as we followed the banks of the Virgin River which continues to be the driving force of the water based erosion that created this jaw-dropping park. Watch as we find some critters and end the day with a magnificent sunset over the massive red rock walls of Zion National Park.

Thanks as always for watching and we hope you enjoyed! If you did make sure to hit the like button, subscribe to our channel for more, share your thoughts below, and tell your friends about us!

Up close look at one of the most powerful flash floods at Zion national park in nearly a decade. There was a 30% chance of rain that day, but the lighting and torrential rain provided a show that not many get to see. 3 inches of water over 3 hours created something that is rarely witnessed at Zion National Park.
