I did a ‘Bottoms Up’ hike to ‘The Subway’ in Zion National Park on March 24, 2019. I started my hike around 7.15 AM and arrived at ‘The Subway’ around 10.00 AM. There was no snow or ice along the route and the water levels were high. It was nice to see Archangel Falls so full. Anyone planning to go on this hike should definitely carry plenty of water and adequate food. The hike is strenuous, but the destination made it all worthwhile I should note that the first 3 miles involve crossing the creek multiple times and negotiating boulders – the scenery is average. The last 1 mile is just spectacular. I highly recommend going in the spring, as the waterfalls are running full.

Here are some vignettes from my hike to ‘The Subway. I shot this footage with a GoPro Hero 7 Black. Photos displayed at the end of the video were shot with the Nikon D850 and the Nikon 24-70 G lens.

Hiking The Narrows in Zion National Park. The headwall raised the water level over 6 feet. Crazy Flash flood. The whistle at the beginning was us trying to warn the people below us on the river.

For spring break I flew to Salt Lake City, Utah. I spent my first day there and then took a scenic road trip to Bryce Canyon National Park, which is where the first part of this video takes place. It was absolutely beautiful and my videos don’t show you how huge the canyon actually is. Around the outside of Bryce I saw a group of wild turkeys and prairie dogs(which are in the video). After Bryce, I went on another scenic drive to Zion National Park which was also very beautiful and got to hike to weeping rock, the emerald pools, and all along the river. Along the route to Zion I found lots of different minerals on hiking paths like pink alabaster, petrified wood, and sandstone. Because one day of slogging through canyons full of snow-melt wasn’t enough (see my hiking the Zion Narrows video), I decided to do another hike to The Subway in Zion National Park in January. The hike in and out aren’t much to speak of: lots of route finding, stream crossing, snow-plowing, and the final ascent back to the parking lot is a killer. But The Subway is spectacular and well worth the trip. Imagine cascades of white water over deep-red rock, bizarre waterscapes, and amazing colors and you’ll start to get the picture.

This video contains some of the highlights from my trip to The Subway, as well as my best shots from the day. Unfortunately, due to operator error, a number of clips I thought I recorded didn’t get recorded, so the video doesn’t contain everything I intended to show and say. I also apologize for my excessive use of the word “bummer.” Oh well, I hope you enjoy it anyway!

Emerald Pool-Lower
Length: 1.2 mile roundtrip
Difficulty: Easy
Trail Map: Zion National ParkTrails Illustrated – Buy

Description: The Lower Pool is popular among hikers for its beauty and accessibility. The trail is short and gently sloped—with only 70 feet of elevation gain. Shaded by cottonwoods and other riverside greenery, the trail winds through one of Zion’s many hidden paradises, leading to a startlingly gorgeous canyon sanctuary. The Emerald Pools system has a few trail options for the three different levels of the Pools. All of them except for one start across the road from the Zion Lodge, where you go over a bridge to cross the North Fork of the Virgin River. Swimming is not permitted at Emerald Pools anymore.

Emerald Pools Trailhead
Two trails start at this spot, the Lower and the Middle. The trail to the lower Pool is fairly straightforward, just over half a mile long, meandering through the riparian habitat along the bottom of the river, even passing underneath the two waterfalls that come from the Middle Pool above.

Lower Pool
Despite the relative ease of the hike, hikers find themselves amid the classic towering rock formations of Zion—but surrounded by a paradise of green.

Middle Pool
Steeper and longer than the Lower Pool Trail, the trail to the Middle Pools begins in the same spot, but climbs higher up the slope, exploring yet another level of the exquisite Zion waterway.

Upper Pool
The Upper Pool is harder to reach than the other two, though worth the extra time that it will take to visit. Waterfalls, fast and powerful during the runoff months, add to the breathtaking backdrop of Zion Canyon.

Our first time canyoneering ever – what an amazing experience. Our guide, Bailey Schofield of Zion Adventure Company in Springfield, let us make all the decisions so it was truly an exploratory and deep learning experience for us. I believe she rated this canyon as 3B2 – which is (3) Intermediate (ropes needed for rapelling/belaying), (B) wet (still pools, swimming expected), and (2) about a half-day required.
